Control Line Update

Letter from Mark Weiss   April 20,  2013

The 2013 Joe Nall is only three weeks away! I wanted to update all of you on the final details about all the activities that will be taking place at Joe Nall's Newest Flight Line, the Control Line Circles.

Special this year is our wish to get as many younger attendees at the Nall to fly a C/L plane at the circles. As a matter of fact, all pilots under the age of 16 will be given a special nameplate signifying the fact that person successfully flew a C/L model at the Joe Nall. These all metal and painted nameplates will become collector items.

We are striving to get every modeler what attends this year's Nall to fly a C/L plane and get their own memento. Of course, we are bringing all the C/L planes anyone could ever wish to fly. Matter of fact, we have all the materials to rebuild as many as necessary!

Boy, do we have a World Class team of C/L pilots to fly and help you fully enjoy the C/L experience. Not only do we have a former Stunt World Champion, a former team member  of the US Stunt Team for World competition, several members of the very prestigious PAMPA Hall of Fame, but we are also expecting some of the very best RC aerobatic pilots flying C/L with names that include Hyde and Kristensen. And some of RCer's best young guns will drop by again to improve their skills with our C/L stunt planes. It just doesn't get any better than this!

Back by popular demand are our special "I Flew C/L at the Joe Nall" Tee and Golf shirts. These are not available anywhere else and they sold out last year before the week was over. Get one and a piece of history: C/Lv.2..our second year at the Nall. The artist again this year is Tony Albence, a very gifted modeler who is also responsible for the incredible "Warbirds Over Delaware" shirts and accessories.

Regardless of your age, if you bring your own control line plane with you, please come down to the circles and fly it on the wonderful circles that Pat and his crew have created. Pat and all of us would appreciate mufflers on your glow engined airplanes. If you need some help or have not flown in a while, we have a whole team and experienced pilots and instructors on site. We are also bringing all the field support equipment anyone could ever want or need to keep your planes in the air. You will find it very easy to identify our team of helpers: each member will be wearing a unique and very bright safety green cap with the "Triple Tree Aerodrome" logo on the front. Trust me, you cannot miss these hats!

If you did not bring a plane but would like to experience the joy and fun of flying a control line plane, c'mon down for we have brought more than one dozen trimmed and flight tested C/L planes for you to fly. We will not only supply the plane for you to fly, but an instructor as well. We have three levels of planes, from the new beginner all the way to the experienced stunt flier. How can you get set up with a plane and an instructor? You got it....just look for anyone wearing a really bright safety green cap!

If you are just curious and would like to learn more about the original "fly by wire," come by and say hello. If you want more details, just look for one of the folks with those special caps! We will be having demonstration flights all week, both at the circles and during some of the noon shows on the main flight lines.

The green capped team would appreciate your understanding in terms of the hours we will be available for training. We will be prepared to begin each day at 9:00AM with a lunch break to coincide with the noon time demonstrations. Training will open again at 1:30PM and continue until 5:00PM.

For those who do not need any assistance flying their own C/L planes, the middle circle, Circle #2 will be available all week for open flying. We will have a sign up list for both Circles 1 and 2. If no one is waiting and you just completed a flight, fuel up (or change your batteries) again and enjoy yourself.

So, c'mon down and have some real fun. Experience the roots of controlled model airplane flying without servos, 2.4 transmissions, receivers, and everything else that makes RC not quite as simple and enjoyable as C/L flying.

Mark

As many of you know, it is one thing to have grand ideas and quite another to pull them off. In the case of supplying a fleet of 15 flight tested and brand new fully equipped control line models for the attendees of the Joe Nall to experience and enjoy, the idea came to be a reality thanks to many people and organizations. Here are the organizations and individuals (in alphabetical order) that provided the support so we can offer you the "handle" in May:

Aerospace Composite Products

AMA District V

AMA Headquarters

APC Props

Brodak Manufacturing

Byron Originals

Castle Creations

Corehouse

Hitec

Horizon Hobby

Hubin Timers

Metroliners C/L Club

Robin's View Productions

Sonic Tronics

S&W Fuel

Stevens Aeromodels

Sullivan Products

Thunderpower RC

Tom Morris C/L Products

Warren Walker Landing Gear

....and personal donations from some really great friends from Delaware

Then, you still need to add that core of experienced C/L pilots who also happen to be excellent builders and designers. Without the designing, building, assembling, and test flying of the 15 aircraft, we would still be out of luck. Fortunately, the support we get continues to be incredible. Here are those folks for all of us to thank:

Bob Hunt

Tom Hanpshire

Frank Imbriaco

Tom Morris

Buddy Wieder

and even me......but I am not in the same league as there guys!

So, when you visit the circles, look for some nametags and thank these five folks as well as the caring organizations who also made the week of flying our C/L planes at the Nall possible.

Hello Again,                                                                                                      03/20/2013

It is hard to believe that almost five months have gone by since my last "letter" to you. I am happy to report that this year's Control Line (C/L) Flight Line will be bigger and better than last year's inaugural edition! If you experienced the fun and flying we had in 2012, you cannot imagine how much more will be there for the taking this coming May.

Want proof? OK, last year, we had three small electric powered planes for all to try and fly. These were the great Stevens Aeromodels RingRat 250's. Equipped with timers, we were able to set the run time as well as the rpm's. We are bringing three back this year but also bringing, for YOU to fly, a small fleet of specially built intermediate planes designed by former World Champion Bob Hunt. Bob, who does the C/L stunt articles each month in "Model Aviation" got with a few of his friends and designed a larger plane with break-away motor pods in case of a crash. There planes will fly on 60 foot lines and offer much more pull on the handle for the pilot. That's a good thing. These will be powered by eFlite 15 motors and also feature timers so we can set the perameters to fit your skill level. How's that!

That's not all. Noted designer and flyer Tom Morris has spent some of his time and assembled a small fleet of his full stunt profile "Cavaliers." These fly on 62 foot lines and are powered by eFlite 25's. Again, these are equipped with state-of-the-art timers that set up everything. These will be available to experienced C/L pilots who want to see what all the fuss is regarding electric-powered C/L stunt. By the way, at this year's Stunt World Championships, the top four places were planes that were electric powered.

So, we will have planes for anyone to fly from the smaller RingRats, to Bob Hunt's intermediate designs up to full stunt on Tom Morris' machines. There is no where on this earth that anyone who attends the Joe Nall can fly these wonderful planes built and equipped by top modelers and fly them as much as they want. So, everyone is invited down to the C/L area to enjoy themselves and to watch pure enjoyment on the faces of everyone who watches or participates.

When you come to the circles this year, you will see a whole bunch of guys wearing bright green caps. These are your C/L Instructors. Walk over and say hello and we will get you ready to fly the original fly-by-wire. And while you are at it, you may be taught by a former World Champion! How's that for free?

Now, we are asking for your help. This year, Mr. Bob Shaw and Mr. Pat Hartness  have made a commitment to insure that the C/L area is a permanent site for many years to come. That commitment started last year with Pat and his crew building world-class circles. This year, Pat re-did the three circles and they will be the best anywhere, and I mean anywhere in the US or abroad. Bob and Pat are willing to make this investment for they (and we) believe C/L is on a strong rebound and needs an influx of new youngsters to step into the middle of the circles.

The Joe Nall Control Line Youth Challenge

How can you help? Bring a youngster to the Nall and get them to the circles. They will be so appreciative for the control line experience can only be realized by holding a handle and flying a plane. Secondly, pass the word to your friends who are coming to the Nall, even if they are coming to fly RC. Tell them what we have to offer and ask them to bring their children and their friends. Finally, pass the word between May 11 and May 18, right here at Triple Tree. Tell every youngster you see that they should grab their parents and get down to the C/L circles. To make this even sweeter, we are working on giving a very special Joe Nall memento to every youngster who gets in the circles and feels the magic of good old control line flying!

We are fortunate to have found the magic formula in the bottle! It takes a few ingredients and we have been blessed to have them in our grasp. It takes a couple of people who can make things happen and those two are Pat Hartness and Bob Shaw. Of course, they are backed by Mike Gregory, Mark Davidson, and the entire crew. The second ingredient is to have fellow modelers willing to give their time, their talents, and their skill to come to the Nall and share their joy in the circles with you.

Finally, it takes a group of manufacturers who again have supported our efforts, especially with our fleet of e-powered planes. Please thank these companies in any way you can, for they have made our fleet of exceptional  airplanes possible:

10/05/2013

Hi. My name is Mark Weiss. As was the case for this past Joe Nall, Pat has asked me to oversee the new Control Line Flight Line for 2013. While it is only late October, Pat and his crew have already begun to work on the circles and plan for next May. From all accounts, these will be the best CL circles in the USA: they are that good!

I have begun my planning as well to make sure that all folks who come by the circles next year have a wonderful and memorable experience. This past May, we put in 241 training flights on our planes for all modelers and their families who wanted to experience the original "flying by wires!" As far as I know, it is the only flight line at the Nall where you can fly someone else's planes without getting in trouble....and not worry if the landings are not on the wheels. I was fortunate enough to be in the circle with many kids and some of their Mom's. I beliebe they had the best time of all. Many of the RC'ers told me and Bruce (Jennings) that they have been unsuccessfully trying for years to get their wives to fly RC and here they take the handles without any extra encouragement! Look out guys....

We also had some of this country's finest Control Line (CL) stunt pilots including Derek Barry, former member of the US Control Line Stunt World Team. Some of you may recall that at the 2011 Nall, Derek put on a terrific demonstration during Friday's noontime program. Also flying were other great notables including Allen Brickhaus, Will Davis, Craig Gunder, Joe Adamusko, Tom Morris and so many others. Noted RC'ers came down to try their hands and that group included Mac Hodges, Warren Thomas, Bob Trueworthy, Gerald Neal, and several of the young guns you have seen at noon time demonstrations as well as the eTOC in Toledo and the Tucson Shootout. We also had former FI and Indy Car driver Juan Pablo Montoya come down and fly CL for the first time. Not surprisingly, he did very well. By the way, Tony Stewart's pilot is no slouch in the CL circles either.

So, how do we top what took place in 2012? Well, Mr. Hartness has already raised that bar. Those new circles will have no equal. How's that for a start! Our group will again be bringing electric CL planes for anyone to try their hands; we will also be bringing advanced electtric powered stunt planes for the experienced fliers to try; we will once again offer Tee and Golf shirts which were sold out last year. These will become undoubtedly become collectors items.

Last year, Bob Shaw brought his wonderful hangar of top quality CL planes and we are hoping Bob and his team return next year.

Last year, we introduced the ultimate hybird for the Joe Nall: radio control line planes! What? Yop, we had a tether in the middle of one circle with 60 feet of two CL cables. At the other end was a 36" plane fitted with elevator and throttle servos, a nicad battery and of course, a receiver. What a hoot! Pat took the transmitter in his hands and took off, flew around quite well and did a great landing, all on his first attempt. Maybe we will bring that back for 2013.

We plan on having some raffles as well as CL vendors.  Not only will you be able to watch but you can buy and get your CL plane going.

Next year, we will have more of this country's finest CL pilots and they will not only be flying stunt but other events as well. Have you seen the blazing speed of combat flying?

Remember, these high speed planes are never more than 60 feet or 1 second away from mother earth.

Next year many of the folks took full advantage of camping right on the grounds. As Pat says, that is the way to experience all the comeraderie of the Joe Nall.

I will be providing updates as May 11th draws nearer. If you have any questions, please shoot me an email: ama82824@yahoo.com

Have a wonderful Holiday Season and I look forward to meeting you at the CL Flight Line next year......

Mark
